Driven by a desire to provide their children with something more, several families in the early 1990s prayerfully sought the right educational model that would honor God. In the fall of 1996, Peninsula Community Chapel founded Summit Christian Academy, opening its doors at Immanuel Baptist Church in Newport News with approximately 35 students. These students, from K4 through 6th grade, were grouped into four combined classes: K4/K5, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, and 5th/6th. The families who carried that initial vision, along with the faculty and staff who joined Summit in its early days, were pioneers in the school’s mission to educate and disciple young men and women through a classical Christian education.
Over the next six years, Summit continued to grow, adding one grade each year. In 2000, Peninsula Community Chapel completed its facility in Yorktown, which became home to the Upper School. By the spring of 2003, Summit proudly celebrated its first graduate.
As the school approached its 20th anniversary, there was an increased demand for enrollment in the early grammar grades. After prayer and planning, God gave Summit’s School Board a vision for growth, accommodating two classes per grade level. In the fall of 2019, the school year began with two 1st grade classes. Since then, the expansion has continued and SCA now has two classes for K5 – 5th grade, with plans to double classes through 6th grade. This growth required additional classroom space to support the increase in students. In August of 2024, the Grammar School opened in its new location at Grafton Baptist Church off Route 17 in Yorktown.
In the decades since its founding, Summit has grown to serve more than 250 students in grades K4 – 12 and has graduated more than 350 alumni. As Summit approaches its 30th year, God continues to provide the Board with a vision for growth. With the increasing number of students, Summit embarked on its first capital campaign to expand and create additional classrooms. Summit remains committed to pursuing academic depth by continuing to invest in classical Christian training, professional development, and adding a science lab at the Upper School. We marvel at the Lord’s faithfulness and are diligently seeking His direction as we plan for Summit’s next 25 years. To God be the glory!
